Lower School Student Dress Code
Monday through Thursday
November 1st through March 31st:
The Lexington School's dress code requires slacks or knee-length skirts in
solid khaki, navy, or black, along with any
solid-colored collared, button down, or turtleneck shirts. Solid-colored fleeces with collars, jackets, or sweaters with collared shirts or turtlenecks underneath may also be worn. All clothing items should be devoid of pictures or patterns. This includes tights and knee socks. Any solid-colored, jewel-necked, or collared dresses or jumpers are okay on any school day. Belts
must be worn if belt loops are visible. Straight hemmed shirts such as polos or blouses may be worn “out”. All button-down shirts or those with long shirttails need to be tucked in.
Opening of school until October 31st (warm weather season):
AND
April 1st until the close of school (warm weather season):
The same dress code applies, but walking shorts (almost to the knee) or cropped pants in khaki, navy, or black are allowed.
Friday dress-up:
For girls this means a dressier outfit that includes a dress, jumper, or skirt along with acceptable footwear with socks or tights. The solid color rule does not apply on dress-up day. For boys it's a dressier outfit that includes a tucked-in, collared dress shirt (no polo-style knit shirts, please), tie, and sport coat along with acceptable footwear and socks. During “warm weather season” sport coats are not required, and boys may wear dressier walking shorts in Lower School. “Dressier” would exclude cargo shorts, elastic waist shorts, or athletic shorts. The tradition is to raise the standard of dress on dress-up day but to remain steadfast in our request for dress conducive to learning and safety.
All Fridays will be dress-up days unless there is a weather dispensation (see exceptions). Other days where dress-up attire is required are Holiday Concert, school photo days, and Candle Lighting Ceremony.
Footwear:
Lower school students are expected to wear comfortable shoes with socks or tights. Tennis shoes with socks or tights may be worn any day, all year. During the “warm weather season,” secure fitting sandals with a heel strap may be worn without socks.
“No-no’s”:
Mini-skirts, shorter-than-walking shorts, 100% spandex clothing (unless worn under other clothing), warm-up suits, t-shirts, sweatshirts, camouflage clothing, sweatpants, athletic pants, anything that exposes the midriff or bares the shoulder or has a plunging neckline, visible belt loops without belts, and ill-fitting clothing (either too big or too small) are not allowed. Denim apparel in any color is not acceptable.
Lower school students are asked not to wear shoes that have heels of over 2 inches, platform heels, or shoes that aren't secured around the heel, such as flip-flops or slides.
Exceptions:
On the first calendar school day of each month (other than Friday), there will be a “jeans day” for the entire school. Jeans or other regular dress bottoms along with regular dress tops are appropriate. The solid color rule
does apply on these “jeans days” in Lower School.
The calendar dates for “jeans days” appear in the Green Book.
There will be days when the school will declare special “jeans days.” These will be communicated in advance. There is also a tradition that The Lexington School calls a “jeans day” if Fayette County has declared a snow day while TLS in session. This will be confirmed on the school website.
When there are extremes in the high temperature (above 90 or below 20), dress-up day will be dispensed with. Again, when there are extremes in the forecast high temperature (above 90 or below 20), dress-up day will be dispensed with. Please check the TLS website for that information.
